Gentle Readers, may I introduce M'sieu Squiddy.

I considered waiting to post these pictures until tomorrow, because workdays == more people reading == potentially more comments, but in a pitfight of Ego vs. Squid, the winner is obvious.

Full frontal squid.

M'sieu Squiddy was constructed in two pieces. For reference/scale, that's a bottle of SFX hair dye that he's been shaped around.

M'sieu Squiddy lounges upon a book about the Voynich Manuscript for inspiration.

M'sieu Squiddy snuggles into the scarf constructed from [info]kipple's care package.

Until reaching full world-devouring size, M'sieu Squiddy practices upon an IKEA light on a dusty computer case.

M'sieu Squiddy comes for YOU.

I'm still trying to decide what to use for his eyes, and what colour they should be. I'm pretty sure that Fabricland doesn't carry huge, luminous green buttons, but big glossy black buttons could be stylish as well. Once the eyes are decided upon, he can be sewn together and stuffed -- or he could forever perch on one of my empty dye-bottles, as well.

M'sieu Squiddy was my prototype. Since he turned out so awesomely, I shall have to make another, with longer tentacles replete with suckers and two proper 'flippers'.

For those perverse few who might be interested in the more technical knitterly details, see the post here for additional info.

Ia ia.

I'm not certain we'll be able to find a happy compromise between 'worth my time' and 'worth paying for', but I'm happy to discuss it, at least.

Drop me a line at kalimonster@gmail and we can see if it's possible.

Reminds me of a certain guild tabard.

I covet your squid. And I vote for red eyes.

I saw a picture of The Hat They Call Jayne knitted with embroidery floss (I think) the other day -- it fit on a fellow's thumb.

Do not get any ideas. ;) I think miniature knitting is madness.

A friend of mine found this site. They'll make you custom eyes -- some of the fish/reptile eyes would be effin' perfect -- but they're $20 a pair: http://www.vandykestaxidermy.com/product/01301503/

Something to consider when I have more play money. Until then, M'sieu Squiddy will have to be content with buttons.

I once read an article about a woman that carved toothpicks into the characters from the Wizard of Oz. She painted them with a cat's whisker.

Holy crap. That's a big ball of cephalopodic awesomeness.

That is a most squeeful yarny creture. So terribly cute. M'sieu is of course impatient to grow to full whale/ship devouring size, but we do enjoy his company at his current stature.

Figuring out how to shape him was the tricky part. Once I had that set, the knitting's fairly straight-forward.

The best part about felting him -- and the fact that the wool I used turned out to be fantastic for the job -- is that all the loose ends and slightly odd spots of texture vanish entirely.

Making a knitted/unfelted squid would probably take twice again the work I just put in, before I'd be happy with it.
